copyright2

Awwwww. What a cute picture of a cat with his big blue eyes and his long whiskers and it looks like he’s taking a selfie oh boy I can’t wait to post this for my own monetary profit or recognition BUT WAIT. There’s a copyright watermark on the image for an Andres Ruffo. Andres was smart, or in the least bit just using common sense. By using his copyright mark on his image, he is preventing the publication of it anywhere else without his consent.

Basically, copyright is the legal protection of a creator’s right to a work. In more detail, according to the Copyright Act of 1976, it is a law that recognized the rights of an individual creator from the time they have created a work and that protects a creative work for the lifetime of that author plus 70 years.

Personally, I believe copyright is an incredible thing that exists. If I was talented enough to create something that affected people lives, I’d want credit for that, not a radical idea.

Especially in today’s world where social media rules, there’s always somebody who wants to take glory for copied posts without giving credit to the initial creator. This also applies as an issue with online plagiarism. A specific case where this occurred was with social media persona ‘The Fat Jew’. Hit the link from Forbes below to learn more.

Also all definitions used in this are my own from a previous class on media management that I took, therefore I feel no need to list any source

  1. Hi Ty,
Interesting post and link as I’d never thought about joke copyright and plagiarism until now so thanks for the enlightenment!

I had a few thoughts reading your reflection…
You said copyright is an incredible thing, but do you think it’s actually effective? Particularly as you mentioned, we live in such a social media driven world, copyright laws are ignored and broken everyday.

In saying that, I agree it can be effective when creators do as Andres did in your example using a watermark as it makes copyright a visual concept and a reminder that it exists (if that makes sense). Otherwise, the thought copyright is kind of a lost and forgotten online so users go about downloading and posting material without guilt. It reminds me of the phrase ‘it’s only illegal if you get caught.’

    Thanks for the read!

  2. Hi Ty,

Really good blog post on copyright! I’ve read your other posts’ as well and I think you’re a very talented writer. You’re straight to the point and you don’t ramble on at all.

I love your satire in this post, but within this undertone of sarcasm you definitely get your point across to readers. I appreciate your truthfulness regarding copyright and how you think it is an incredible thing that exists.

Just one thing I think you could do, maybe just a bit more explanation on the topic. But in all honestly I think this post is already pretty good.

    Thanks!

  3. Hello Ty,
Great post with interesting points! I love the image of the cat and the way you explained the sense of copyright with humour.
I love the point where you said “there’s always somebody who wants to take glory for copied posts”. I strongly believe in this especially due to social media being such a big thing in today’s society!
I also believe copyright is an incredible thing because it allows credit to be taken for the creators hard work. Can’t imagine working hard on something and then someone else taking credit for it.
Good luck with your future posts!
