Banksy.jpgBanksy is an artistic icon.

Banksy is a cultural hero.

Banksy is a revolutionary social media user.

Banksy is unknown.

Banksy is a graffiti artist, presumably male, who has been making the streets his canvases for over ten years. His work often includes controversial politics and religion. Despite his work being shown everywhere, and the mass gatherings that occur at all of his artworks, he has managed to stay completely anonymous.

This past August saw his culminating work ‘Dismaland’ come to life. Banksy describes Dismaland as “a sinister twist on Disneyland” featuring art from dozens of artists including himself. Despite only being open for 36 days, the park saw 150,000 visitors.

The HBO documentary ‘Banksy Does New York’ chronicles regular people who will do anything to get a glimpse of his work. Every day for thirty days Banksy would secretly make an art piece somewhere overnight in New York City, then in the morning post it to Instagram. Hundreds of people would take cars, subways, and bikes before they had their coffee. Some of these have been vandalized or stolen, while others were even given class casings for permanent conservation.

His work has also been excellently documented in the movie ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’ which can be found for free on Netflix (not a paid promotion). The story follows a French man who finds and films Banksy while he works, begins to make his own art, and becomes successful just from working with Banksy. However it has been the subject to countless reviewers, including Roger Ebert, as being a hoax.

I think Banksy is a perfect example of transmedia storytelling because he uses social media in order to share his art works with the world. His art alone acts as a catalyst to get people to open their eyes and mind to their surrounding cultural issues.

  1. Olah.
For starters I really like the fact you used Banksy as an example of transmedia story telling.
I believe the examples you have given are insightful and I find the links informative and interesting.
Do you think you could incorporate one of Banksy’s art works into a meme regarding transmedia? I think that would give your post even more of an impact.
I really enjoyed your blog, nice work 😀

  2. This was a great read! I loved his unique styles through paintings and sculptures. You have successfully linked him to transmedia storytelling through his use of different social media platforms in order to reach a wider audience. All i can say is remember to cite all statistics you have used and even a link to one of his social media cites would have saved me the search. Really interesting take :).

  3. I love Banksy! I studied him for Society and Culture. The documentary you linked me to was a good watch. Perhaps some examples of his work within the content of your blog post would have been aesthetically pleasing. Or perhaps made a prezi to connect both words and pictures. Overall a really interesting read for me!
